The Town of Livorno |
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
Flourishing seaport and university town (Navy academy) Its livelihood thrives on the sea !
Livorno has become one of the biggest container ports in the Mediterranean. Beyond the fortifications it preserves few old buildings, especially since the systematic destruction of 1943, but the town has been well reconstructed. The spacious seaboard is particularly attractive and the town has a lively air. The huge "Piazza della Republica", overlooked by the moated "Fortezza Nuova" (1590), is linked by the Via Grande with the central Piazza Grande. Here stands the Duomo, rebuilt in 1954-59. The interior contains ceiling paintings by Ligozzi, Passignano, and Empoli. Also notable the "Piazza Giuseppe" and the "Piazza der Domenicani", with the Domincan church of "Santa Caterina".
The pleasant "Viale Italia" skirts the shore with a wide promenade passing gardens and elegant seaside houses, and 19C hotels and bathing establishments. On the "Piazzale Mascagni", a pretty terrace built out into the sea, is the Aquarium and farther on, the huge Naval Academy founded in 1879. One can also discover and experience a small piece of Venice in "Venezia nuova" - an interesting quarter built in the 18C after the example of Venice, with canals that flow through this part of town.
The town, which thrives from the sea, has many good fish restaurants and a fish market which is famous throughout Italy and well worth a visit !
Car ferries connect Livorno with Sardinia, Corsica and Elba.

The Etruscan Wine Route |
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
Attenzione! all wine lovers and connoisseurs, keep a special eye open for the "Etruscan wine route". A red wine producing region, 30km from Volterra, which stretches between Montescudaio and Piombino. Superior wines, very mellow in taste! One can purchase the wine locally, either directly from one of the many vineyards or in one of the towns or villages situated along the coast. Wine tasting is naturally available ! Salute !

The Island of Elba
|
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
Impressive scenery, modern seaside resorts, rich in history, following the trail of Napoleon
Portoferraio is the chief town and port of Elba. The modern seafront where the ferries dock is not so attractive, but the old port at the end of the promontory is much livelier and used by private boats. Here beyond a fortified gateway is the old quarter, still the centre of the town, with a covered market. A road leads up to the Medici fort which dominates the port and from which there is a good view. Napoleon's principle residence was the "Villetta die Mulini", on the "Palazzina Napoleonica" with a small garden behind the villa overlooking the sea. 6 km along the road, south east of Portoferraio, is the "Villa San Martino" in a pretty fertile valley, Napoleons summer residence and today a museum, "Museo Napoleonico".
5 km west of Portoferraio lies "Le Grotte"surrounded by some of the most beautiful and picturesque scenery ! Porto Azzuro
is the main town in the eastern part of the island and is a fashionable resort overlooking a beautiful bay. It is one of the most attractive corners of the island.
Further on are the abandoned mines of "Terra Nera" where a 'green' lake has formed due to the high content of sulphur in the water. Those interested in old mines should visit Rio Marina, interesting as the chief ore-port and centre of the mining area, with its small but fascinating "Museo Minerali Elbani".
Marciana Marina is a pretty little port with sardine fisheries and is also one of the most popular bathing resorts. The cylindrical tower on the mole was built by the Pisans in the 12C
The road around the west shore of the island, via the pretty village of Chiessi amidst vineyards, has splendid views and wild scenery. Marina di Campo on the south coast, has wonderful fine, sandy beaches and is perfect for all water sports.
Wine production on the island of Elba also has its tradition. The main wine producing town and centre of the wine trade is Marciana on the north coast.
As you can see everything that is typically "Italian" can be found on this charming and attractive island. Above all Sant'Ilario di Campo with its 200 inhabitants is classed as the most beautiful place on the island !
Last but not least, and highly recommended, is a trip to the summit of Monte Capanne
(1018m, highest point on the island) with amazing views right across to Corsica on a clear day !!... Buon divertimento!

Piombino
|
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
The town of Piombino is usually a short stopping point or approaching point for tourists taking the ferry across to the Island of Elba. Frequent car ferries and hydrofoils run to Portoferraio on the north coast of Elba in approx. 1 hr (hydrofoil in 1/2 hr).

Populonia
|
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
Should you have time or wish to visit the area, then just 10 km north of Piombino is the castellated village preserving the name of Populonia. Approximately 5000 inhabitants live in the fine "Borgo" dating back to the 15/16 C, with an absolute magnificent view overlooking the romantic "Golf von Baratti".
Whichever direction one takes or begins to explore, one continually stumbles or comes across ancient ruins and antique remains almost everywhere, attesting the regions historical and famous history !

S. Vincenzo
|
|
|
.................................................................................................................................................................................
An absolute "local tip" on the gourmet side, can be found in San Vincenzo
(15 km north of Populonia). One of the top ten best restaurants in Italy, "Gambero Rosso"
(Piazza della Vittoria). Prepare to let yourselves be pleasantly surprised by the owner and his wife with their culinary expertise.
Your palate will dance with joy !!
And for relaxation, for the body and mind, how about a bit of pampering at the "Terme Valle del Sole" in Caldana.
Just the thing for revitalising your organs and regenerating new energy !!
