General Information Bardolino
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

The small town of Bardolino gives name to a well-known lightly fizzy red wine, the vines growing across the hilly hinterland of the former fishing village that now possesses a more urban atmosphere. The old town, with its wide passages and backstreets, numerous shops and long promenade, invite you to stroll at leisure until late in the evening. Many of the shops stay open until midnight along with the restaurants, bars and discos.

Inland from Bardolino, amid the picturesque rolling vineyards and olive groves, are many wineries and wine growing estates, as well as olive oil producers, who offer wine tasting sessions and oil sampling and one can purchase local produce on site. Some have also built miniature museums. Either side of Bardolino's town centre one can find pretty beaches and paths along the banks of the lake to the neighbouring towns of Garda or Lazise.

Cisano is a small village to the south of Bardolino which lies directly on the lake. Here you can find wonderful bathing facilities and large, family friendly camping sites which have their own private beaches. Many of the restaurants in Cisano offer a relaxed dining atmosphere and good food. Just south of the village is the "Museo dell'Olio", a museum of olive oil with the opportunity of sampling many of the local culinary specialities.

General Information Brenzone
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

The community of Brenzone includes 16 small villages and hamlets all scattered and dotted across the landscape at the foot of the Monte Baldo. Each and everyone has maintained its original charm and character- narrow, often steep lanes and backstreets, historical houses, olive groves and all of them enjoy a calm and peacefulness that none too often can be found around the lake.

Some of the villages lie directly on the waters edge with picturesque little harbour bays, pretty promenades, and quaint bathing areas. They are particularly well known for their fish specialities including eel, fished directly from the lake, or sardines which have become a well known delicacy of the region.

Other villages can be found higher up amid the undisturbed countryside and offer magnificent views overlooking the lake. The footpaths and hiking trails up into the hills can be very narrow and winding and also very steep, but indeed worth the effort just for the remarkable views. Each village can be used as a starting point for hikes, cycle tours and excursions up to the Monte Baldo, very popular among the locals. There are plenty of hotels and camping sites in the area if in need of accommodation.

General Information Desenzano and Laverna
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

With more than 20.000 inhabitants, Desenzano is a lively little town and the largest town on the lake but, unlike its neighbouring towns and villages, it is not dominated by tourism. Desenzano was once one of the most important trading centres in north of Italy and around the harbour and in the old town are many wonderfully restored buildings which were once used as trading houses.

Signs of wealth and affluence are clearly visible in Desenzano through its noble shops, its large yachting harbour and its elegant promenade. It is also a cathedral town and renowned too for its number of elite schools. Desenzano also offers a lively nightlife with many bars and discos.

South of Desenzano lies the "Colline Moreniche Mantovane del Garda", an unusual picturesque hilly landscape area formed during the Ice Age which stretches as far as the plains of the river Po. Here is where fierce battles were fought between the Italian liberation army and the Austrians.

Lonato
6km west of Desenzano lies this pretty and very typical Lombardian town with its magnificent Baroque cathedral and mighty dome. From the ruins of the "Rocca" castle (reconstructed in its 15C form), one has glorious views of the surrounding landscape across to Lake Garda. This was once the scene of French victories over the Austrians in 1509, 1706, and 1796 , the last an early success of Napoleon's. The castle houses a small museum and a fine library.

General Information Garda
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Garda, once a fortified town and still retaining some interesting old houses, lies at the head of a deep bay. It gave its name to the lake in the 12th Century and is very popular among tourists today.

Surrounded by lush green Mediterranean vegetation of cypress trees, olive groves and oleander, the town is known, ever since the roman times, as the pearl of the lake with its stylish Venetian palaces, beautiful promenade and romantic winding backstreets of the old town. Along the promenade one can enjoy the view of the lake from the many restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours or watch the sun setting of an evening, for which Garda is very famous for. There are very good bathing opportunities around Garda, the beach to the south stretching as far as Bardolino, to the north as far as the peninsular Punta San Viglio.

Costermano
The village of Costermano lies in a peaceful and secluded setting amid the beautiful landscape of rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves to the east of Garda. From here one can enjoy the amazing view of the lake and be within a few minutes reach from the beach or the town of Garda. A panoramic route leads down through the countryside and the valley of "dei Mulini" to the old Costermano mill and onto the town of Garda.

Marciaga
Just outside Costermano is the famous Marciaga 18 hole golfing course set in glorious surroundings and with panoramic views of the lake. There are also absolute exquisite hotels and complexes available close to the course.

General Information Limone
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Limone sul Garda takes its name from its lemon plantations, said to be the first in Europe. Situated on the west side of the lake with rocky shores and steep cliffs descending into the lake, the terraced lemon and lime gardens become more noticeable on the approach to the town. It is a charming town with houses built over and above one another against the cliffs and has a lovely picturesque old town with winding lanes and quaint backstreets.

The lemon has become a symbol for the town and marketed on tiles, t-shirts, towels and postcards etc. It is now a very popular tourist destination and extremely busy in summer. Despite the hustle and bustle in the often crowded narrow streets, there is still that romantic feel and charm and a calm and stillness about the town that is difficult to describe.

Just to the south of Limone the shores become wider and there several camping sites set close to the wonderfully long beach.

General Information Lazise
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

This lively little town, situated at the south east corner of the lake, has a charming medieval centre closed to traffic and has also retained part of its medieval town wall.

It has been succeeded by Bardolino as the chief port on this shore and a castle of the Scaligers (with Venetian additions) and the 16C Venetian custom house attest to its former importance and form a charming group on the lake front. The narrow streets and hidden-away piazzas characterise the old town inviting you to stroll and explore at leisure before ending up on the popular promenade lined with restaurants, bars and cafes where it can get quite busy in the evenings.

To the south of Lazise is a wonderfully long beach which is privately owned and charges apply for use. Nearby are several well equipped camping sites with modern facilities which are also very family friendly. Some also have their own private bathing and beach facilities. The nearby leisure parks such as Gardaland and Canevaworld have made Lazise a popular holiday destination for families.

Colà
To the south of Lazise, and just a few minutes away from Lake Garda, lies the small village of Colà with its thermal spa "Parco Thermale del Garda" situated in the middle of beautiful park. The 5000 sq metre thermal lake with its spring fountain, small waterfall, grottos and various underwater massages invite you to take a refreshing dip and enjoy a relaxing experience.

General Information Peschiera del Garda
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Peschiera del Garda, an ancient fortress, stands to the south east at the outflow of the Mincio from the Lake of Garda. The impressive fortifications (well seen from the road and railway), begun by the Venetians in 1553, were strengthened by Napoleon and again by the Austrians.

Today its importance lies in its position on the main railway line route between Milan and Venice, along with Desenzano, the only towns with railway stations serving Lake Garda.

There are several bathing areas and camping sites situated along the flat shores between Peschiera and Sirmione by the lake. The popular leisure park, Gardaland, is located just 2 km from Peschiera.

Castelnuovo del Garda
In a remote area east of Peschiera lies Castelnuovo, a small secluded village surrounded by absolute stunning landscape and beautiful scenery; rolling green hills planted with long lines of towering cypress trees, olive groves and endless rows of grapevines, traditional old farmhouses and ancient villas dotted across the countryside. Apart from agriculture and wine production, Castelnuovo also profits from the tourism industry due to its ideal location and proximity to Verona and the leisure and nature parks nearby. Castelnuovo also offers very good local and traditional cuisine and a variety of pleasant accommodation.

General Information Riva del Garda
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Riva is a lively and agreeable little town which lies at the narrow north end of Lake Garda and is sheltered by Monte Rochetta to the west.

With approximately 13.000 inhabitants, Riva is the second largest town on the lake after Desenzano. Riva lay in Austrian territory until 1919, and the surrounding heights were strongly fortified. The town was spared by the Italian artillery during the advance of 1915, but it suffered considerably in the course of the campaign. Today the town possesses a wonderful mixed Italian-Austrian atmosphere.

Over the last century the town has developed itself to become a charming and popular spa and health resort and one of the most favoured areas on the lake for tourists and visitors. The mild climate, the many tourist attractions and excursions around Riva and the variety of sporting activities available here have made Riva an attractive destination for young and old - all year round. The impressive mountain range surrounding Riva provides a challenge for mountain bikers, hikers and climbers; the lake, with its constant and challenging winds, a paradise for wind surfers, sailing and also for water skiing; and the sunshine attracts visitors to the longest and prettiest beaches on the lake.

General Information Sirmione
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Set on a narrow promontory on the southern shore of Lake Garda, Sirmione is prized for its strategic location and gentle enchantments since ancient Roman times when wealthy Romans favoured Sirmione as a summer residence.

At the entrance to the little town, which time seems to have passed by, rise the impressive fortifications of 13C Rocca Scaligera, which was a stronghold of the Scaliger family, lords of Verona. A single bridge crosses here taking visitors into the town towards the picturesque and colourful centre and on through the romantic winding streets of the old town.

To the north, at the end of the headland, is an idyllic park area with wonderful views across the lake and the so-called "Grotte di Catullol", really the romantic ruins of a large Roman villa, set amidst olive groves and cypress trees with a splendid view too out over the lake.

The warm sulphur springs ( La Boiola) that rise in the lake, attract many visitors to Sirmiones modern spa resorts, terme "Catullo" and "Virgilio" and numerous large hotels with their health and spa centres.

General Information Torbole-Nago
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Torbole enjoys a privileged location between the north-west slopes of Monte Baldo and the mouth of the Sarca river. The area is favoured by windsurf enthusiasts and walkers who meet for cheerful refreshment at its quaint harbour side.

Once a small and sleepy fishing village, today the town with a population of around 900 inhabitants is extremely well known, well beyond the borders of Italy, and has one of the best wind surfing areas in Europe due to the constant and consistent winds that gather up here at the narrow north end of the lake. In fact Torbole has meanwhile equipped itself virtually entirely for the young and sporting visitors. One whole area of beach has been given over to the wind surfers as well as the many surf centres and hotels and camping sites which have their own surf boards for hire. Mountain bikers and climbers also venture here because of the towns young and sporting flair and the many bars and discos. For the non-sporting visitors there is always the picturesque scenery to enjoy.

Nago
Nago is a peaceful village set 150 metres above the lake between rolling vineyards and commands a splendid panorama of Lake Garda and of the Sarca valley. Nago's charming centre is dominated by alpine architecture with massive houses. Here the "Strada del Monte Baldo" road, an adventurous, serpentine winding road, ascends to the Monte Baldo. Below Nago are the so-called "Marmitte die Giganti", glacier masses that were formed during the ice age that have very steep rocks and cliffs offering perfect opportunities for climbers and climbing tours. The "Palestra di Roccia" is one of the most popular cliffs in the area for climbers.

General Information Torri del Benaco
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

This pretty little harbour town on the east side of the lake is one of the quieter places. Even in summer during the high season one can stroll and manoeuvre easily through the backstreets of the old town and along the promenade without streams of tourists bulging the way.

Via steep and winding zig- zagged roads one can visit the tiny village of Albisano where there is an absolute fantastic view overlooking the lake right across to the opposite side to Maderno. A frequent car ferry also crosses from Torri to Maderno.

There are very good bathing opportunities along the shores either side of Tori. One of the finest pebbled beaches is "Baia dei Pini" shaded by palm trees, which adds to that Mediterranean flair. Just outside Tori is Punta San Viglio on the loveliest headland on the east shore and its pretty beach, "Baia delle Sirene".

General Information Trento
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Trento, the chief town of its province and of the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige, stands near the confluence of the Adige with the Brenta which descends from the Val Sugana on the east. Spectacular mountain ranges encircle the town which presents a cheerful air. Though it remained in Austrian hands until 1918, it is a typically North Italian city and entirely Italian speaking. Particularly interesting and worth visiting are the Castello del Buonconsiglio (the strong-hold of the medieval prince-bishops), the Duomo (a handsome and severe Romanesque building, entirely of marble) and its wonderful piazza with a handsome 18C Neptune fountain, frescoed Palazzi and housing, as well as the museums and churches and various exhibitions. A stroll from the Castello del Buonconsiglio through the old town to the Piazza Duomo and further on through the streets of Via San Marco, Via Manci and Via Belenzani take you on a discovery tour of Renaissance architecture, historical Palazzi and ancient Roman enciente towers (one of the Trenta torri from which Trento is erroneously supposed to have taken its modern name).

General Information Verona
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Verona is a supremely beautiful and attractive city pleasantly situated on the rapid Adige, at the foot of the Monti Lessini. Among the cities of Venetia it is second only to Venice for the interest of its monuments, and it is especially notable for the quantity of its Roman remains. Its modern commercial activity is in great part due to its position at the junction of the two main arteries of transport: from Germany and Austria to Central Italy, and from Turin and Milan to Venice and Trieste.

The focus of life in Verona is the large and busy "Piazza Bra", especially in summer when the opera season begins. The arena, the third largest Roman amphitheatre in existence after the Colosseum in Rome and that at Capua, is in excellent preservation, especially in the interior. The 44 stone stages of the cavea provide space for 22,000 spectators, the topmost stages afford a fine view of the city. A wide promenade known as the Liston borders the N.W. side of Piazza Bra and is lined with fashionable cafes and restaurants. The UNESCO has listed Verona in its protocol of world cultural heritages as a town characterised by its harmonious blend of architecture and monuments representing all the various stages of European history.
