General Information The Town of Grosseto to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Historical Etruscan town situated on the north banks of the Ombrone, also known as the "Lucca of Maremma".

The first or original Italian culture is said to originate from the Etruscans and the Etruscan period, from whom also the name "Toscana" is derived. Its history can almost be relived here in Grosseto through the many interesting archaeological excavation sites and museums.

The capital of the province (with 70 000 inhabitants), Grosseto is also the chief town of the Maremma Toscana. The old town is enclosed in a hexagonal rampart of brick, built by the Medici in 1574-93. The Duomo, "San Lorenzo" (Piazza Dante), is faced with red and white marble (1294), largely rebuilt in the 16C and indifferently restored in 1840-45. The altar of the Madonna delle Grazie incorporating an Assumption by Matteo di Giovanni is especially interesting. The gothic church "San Francesco" (Piazza dell` Indipendenza) contains several "treasures" and the "Museo Archeologico d´Arte della Maremma" (Piazza Baccarini 3) contains Etruscan and Roman antiquities from Rusellae, Vetulonia, and sites in the Maremma.

The very picturesque main square in Grosseto is the perfect setting for soaking up some of the history and culture and that famous Italian flair, especially in the evenings ! Take in the atmosphere and enjoy some of that Italian Dolce Vita !

.................................................................................................................................................................................

The charming medieval village of Capalbio is a centre of the Maremma game reserve. It has also become fashionable as a summer resort. Here in 1997 the artist and sculpture Niki de Saint Phalle made his dream come true by creating the "Il Giardino di Tarocchi" (please refer to opening times, summer/winter !). The park contains bright and colourful life-size sculptures of tarot figures, an amazing and captivating sight !

General Information Monte Argentario
Orbetello, Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Yachting, harbours and summer lifestyle surrounded by stunning landscape and splendid scenery

Situated on a peninsular 30 km south of Grosseto is the picturesque town of Orbetello. Along with the two harbour towns of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, these three towns provide the charm and flair of typical fishing villages for exhausted city folk and holidaymakers in search of calm, tranquillity, relaxation and leisure.

Porto Santo Stefano is a fashionable resort with an elegant yacht harbour and is especially popular due to its exclusiveness. Very noble atmosphere !!

Another famous exclusive resort is the small village of Porto Ercole, a curious, sheltered little port with a delightful and charming old town and fortifications of the Spanish period (16C). Caravaggio was buried here in the local church in 1610. From the port boats, car ferries, and hydrofoils run frequently to the pretty islands of Isola del Giglio and Isola di Giannutri (the smallest island in the Tuscan archipelago).

General Information Pitigliano, Sorana, Sovano to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana
Among some of the most interesting towns in the southern part of Tuscany and the province.

Pitigliano a wine-producing town with a wonderful position, 313m high, on Etruscan foundations. Was the seat of the Orsini and preserves their palazzo "Palazzo Orsini" (Palazzo della Republica), an absolute masterpiece of Tuscan construction, with a delightful courtyard. Other interesting sights include an aqueduct from the 15C, and the barock style cathedral.

The road leading north (connecting Pitigliano, Sorano, Sovana) is also interesting, providing evidence that it was routed by the Etruscans with extensive remains of an Etruscan necropolis, an ancient Etruscan burial place, along the way.

Situated 379 m high above the river Lente, lies the medieval borgo of Sorano (N.E. of Pitigliano) with approximately 2000 inhabitants. It is in a fine position, typical of the Maremma, and has a 15C castle and a palace of the Orsini "Fortezza Orsini". The charming village was closed and declared uninhabitable in 1929 because of landslides. Although many of the houses were lost visitors are still able to experience the atmosphere of a typical Tuscan hilltop medieval village as the centre has been well preserved. Further Etruscan burial places can be seen around the village of Sorano, as well as the church "San Rocco" with its Etruscan tombs.

Sovana: truly romantic !
Sovana is renowned for its wonderful medieval Piazzetta, its central high street lined with charming single storey housing and its oversized churches! Said to be one of the most romantic places in southern Tuscany. In the middle ages a bishopric and the birthplace of Gregory VII (Hildebrand). Here are an Etruscan necropolis, a Romanesque cathedral and the remains of medieval palaces and of a keep of Gregory's family, the Aldobrandeschi. The village is centred around the "Piazza Pretorio". Surrounding it is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria which has a splendid ciborium(9C), "Palazzo Bourbon" del Monte (16C), the "Palazzo del Archivio" (14C) with its charming bell tower, and the "Palazzo Pretorio" (14C), decorated with Sovano's coat of arms and is today a museum, "Centro documentazione dell´area archeologica di Sovana". The museum contains frescoes and tombs from the Hildebrandts, (4 B.C.), as well as Etruscan remains. It is, in fact, one of the most spectacular Etruscan necropolises and well worth a visit.

General Information Roselle to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Roselle is one of the most important Etruscan cities in N. Etruria and one of the largest archaeological excavations sites in Tuscany. The picturesque ruins on a beautiful hillside include the polygonal Etruscan walls, and a forum, roads, and other buildings constructed by the Romans. The most impressive discovery has been a residential building from 7 B.C. !!

.................................................................................................................................................................................

General Information Saturnia to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Looking for peace and in need of relaxation ?? Then a trip to Saturnia, with its pretty little spa where the waters(37oC) have therapeutic qualities, is perhaps just the thing. The locality has become increasingly popular in recent years and also has impressive prehistoric walls and medieval ramparts. It also has very good connections to the coast and to the Amiata mountain range as well as a lively centre with a typical atmosphere and shopping, including typical local produce.

.................................................................................................................................................................................

General Information Talamone to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

The enchanting seaside resort of Talamone, 15 km north of Monte Argentario, lies on a small spit of land and is simply a corner of Tuscan paradise. From the one side you can see Monte Argentario and the island of Giglio, and from the other side you have the small harbour with views of the gentle, rolling hills of the Maremma. Warning, the peaceful and cosy bathing coves are all, unfortunately, rather rocky !

Between Talamone and the mouth of the river Ombrone is yet another splendid area of natural paradise: Parco Naturale Regionale della Maremma! A paradise of nature with woods, swamp lands and marshes. In order to protect the wildlife in its natural environment, access to the park is by local bus only. During the summer months guided tours and hiking trails can be arranged.

Infos über die Toskana, seine Dörfer und Städte Castel del Piano
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Castel del Piano (632m) is a hill resort surrounded by woods and lies on the westside of Monte Amiata. It is first mentioned under the name "Casale Plana" in documents found in the abbey Amiata which date back to 890. From 1175 to 1331 the town was in ownership of the Aldobrandeschi Family before it was captured and taken over by the Republic of Siena. Defeated in 1555, it then became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Traces from medieval times can be seen in the town centre with its narrow streets and Renaissance buildings and towers. On the Piazza della Madonna is the Church dell'Opera, the largest church in the Amiata Region.

A traditional horse race (Palio delle Contrade), similar to Siena, takes place each year around the Piazza Garibaldi in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie. The four main quarters of the town (Contrade) "Borgo, Monumento, Poggio and Storte" race teams against each other. Preceding the race is an historical pageant. .................................................................................................................................................................................

Infos über die Toskana, seine Dörfer und Städte Seggiano
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

The small medieval village of Seggiano lies approximately 40 km north east of Grosseto, near to Monte Amiata, in the Orcia valley and wine-growing area of Montecucco. Also once belonging to the Republic of Siena until defeated in 1555 when it then became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Worth visiting is Il Giardino, a garden of sculptures by the artist Daniel Spoerri. .................................................................................................................................................................................

Infos über die Toskana, seine Dörfer und Städte Monte Amiata
to the toptop     menumenu
.................................................................................................................................................................................

Monte Amiata (1738m) is the highest point in Tuscany. This extinct tree-clad volcano ( last eruption 180.000 years ago) is noted for its rich mercury deposits and thermal sources and hot geysers, evidence of its volcanic origins. This sparsely populated area is covered with chestnut and beech, pine and oak tree woods and pasture land with gentle rivers offering a beautiful contrast landscape to the cultural and historic centres of northern Tuscany. Many wildlife can be seen including wolves and soaring the skies, the snake eagle, vultures, and falcons.

Hiking routes and nature trails invite you to venture out and discover the countryside on foot, horseback or by bicycle. For example, in Autumn, the "strada della Castagna" (chestnut trail) or "strada del vino di Montecucco" (wine route) or from mid-August go searching for the famous porcini mushrooms. There are also many winter-sporting centres on the slopes of Monte Amiata. From the "Vetta Amiata", the summit, one has a magnificent and unique view overlooking the southern area of Tuscany right across the Tuscan Archipelago and over to Corsica. On a clear day it is possible to view the towers of Siena and Lake Trasimeno. .................................................................................................................................................................................
