The Town of Arezzo

Lively centre for antique dealers and enthusiasts.
Arezzo, pleasantly situated on a hillside about 5km south of the Arno, is a lively agricultural provincial town. It has several notable churches and interesting museums. In the church of San Francesco is the famous fresco cycle painted by Piero della Francesca, 'Legend Of The True Cross', his masterpiece, and one of the greatest fresco cycles ever produced in Italian painting. Piero della Francesca is the most celebrated painter from the region and not, as most would believe, Michelangelo, who was born in the small village of Caprese near Arezzo but who gave himself as a `Fiorentinus´. The museum "Museo Archeologico Mecenate", exhibits Etruscan art and bronzes as well as Roman mosaics, statues and bas-reliefs. The museum overlooks vestiges of a Roman amphitheatre, parts of it visible from the museum rooms.
A popular antiques fair is held in Piazza Grande and the surrounding streets on the first weekend of every month, the largest antiques market in Tuscany !
Arezzo is noted for "La Giostra del Saracino", a lively tournament held annually in the Piazza Grande on the first Sunday in September, with an origin going back to the 13C. Competitors, mounted and armed with lances, charge in turn across the piazza. Colourful costumed processions also take place through the streets of Arezzo. Also the "Sagra della Bistecca" - is THE festival celebrating Tuscan gastronomy and which takes place on the 14th/15th of August. A real treat for all gourmet lovers with a 14km long barbeque grill !!

Cortona

The town of Cortona is one of the most ancient cities in Italy. Built on a long hillside with narrow winding streets covering the steep slopes, it is interesting for its Etruscan remains and for its works of art, and commands magnificent views. An antiques fair is held here in September in "Palazzo Vagnotti".
Just 10 km from Cortona is the idyllic 'Lago Trasimeno' or lake Trasimene. A wonderful retreat to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the scenic countryside and the surrounding landscape of green hills and woods. The lake has a circumference of nearly 45km; its depth, never more than 7m. The shores are flat and reedy and it has three islands.

Farneta and La Verna

Amid pine forests, stands the famous monastery "La Verna" in a remarkable position on a curiously shaped outcrop of rock (1129m) visible for many miles around. The site was given to St Francis of Assisi in 1213 and here he received the stigmata. It is still a Franciscan convent and a retreat today. 30 km south is the monastery "Farneta"where the famous abbot "Don Sante Felice", described as the "last Etruscan", resided. Very interesting is a tour of the monastery.

San Sepolcro

San Sepolcro, in the province of Arezzo, is the birth town of the famous painter Piero della Francesca and worth a visit to see some of his paintings and major works which have been kept here on display. The town is also famous for its many goldsmiths and worth taking a look at some of the jewellers!
