Location / area Castelfranco Di Sopra ("di sopra" means above) lies in the Arno valley approximately 35 km south of Florence, at the foot of the "Pratomagno-Massivs" overlooking the magnificent surrounding Chianti landscape of rolling vineyards and olive groves. A typical Tuscan medieval hilltop retreat, Castelfrancos history dates back 750 yrs, which is reflected in its classic medieval town centre and the central piazza from the 15th century. The town was constructed in the 13th century by the Florentines for military purposes. Within the town walls are typical medieval and renaissance buildings and houses, cobbled streets and lanes. Just outside the walls is the Badia di Soffena abbey. After recent restauration work, the abbey has regained its medieval elegance. The villa Castelfranco is situated just 3 km up from the town of Castelfranco.
