Quiet, comfortable apartment in Orbetello (approx. 100 sq m) with large living room and balcony and panoramic views overlooking the lagoon
of Orbetello. Accommodates 2-5 people and contains 2 bedrooms, bathroom including washing machine, living room and kitchen. The beach
(in Feniglia) is just a few minutes away by car or public transport (bus) or bicycle..!!
The property was fully renovated in 2003/2004 and is situated in a quiet neighbourhood (Neghelli) surrounded by residential housing
and is just 5 minutes on foot from the pedestrian area in the centre of Orbetello. The apartment is on the 5th floor of a six storey
building and is accessible by lift or stairs.
The apartment contains a large and spacious living room which opens out onto a balcony with views overlooking the two lagoons of Orbetello.
The kitchen also has a small balcony and there are parking spaces available in the courtyard.
Shops, restaurants, bars, ice cream parlours etc, can all be found in the pedestrian area and centre of Orbetello, just 5 minutes away on foot,
as well as a large supermarket.
The beach ("Feniglia") is too far to reach on foot, either by car (except during high season 1.07. - 26.08.) or public bus.
There are two other alternatives: One can drive and park at the peninsular, Monte Argentario, where you have an entrance to the beach La Feniglia
(shorter distance),
or you can drive to Ansedonia, slightly further, where there is another entrance to the beach. Of course there are also many other small bays
and delightful areas around the peninsular to visit !!
Orbetello and surrounding area
To give you an idea of the area around Orbetello one needs to take a little look back at the history of the region. Orbetello lies
in the shadows of Monte Argentario, the Tuscan peninsular as it's called, or silver coast (costa d'argento), and is very rich in history.
Orbetello was an Etruscan colony and a place of importance in the Middle ages. It was fortified in 1557 by the Spaniards who also left the
Polveriera (powder-works). The cathedral preserves a lovely façade of 1376 and an early Romanesque marble altarpiece. Along with its Etruscan
town walls, other sights include the Museo Civico, with archaic sculpture in bronze and stone, the pavilion, the Holy Franciscus church, the old
mill and the Antiquarium. Today, Orbetello is a fashionable summer resort where, on clear mornings, there is a wonderful view across the lagoon to
Monte Argentario.
Monte Argentario is an almost circular penisular joined to the mainland by three 3 narrow strips of land, the outer two, both pine clad,
defining the Laguna di Orbetello. The town of Orbetello occupies the central strip while the southern strip of land, Feniglia, is an enclosed
nature preservation area and national park with a beautiful sandy beach shaded by tall pine trees. The park is also home to many wildlife such
as red deer, wild boar and foxes. On the third strip, Giannella is a road leading to the Monte Argentario. The peninsular is now one of the most
praised areas of Tuscany. It has an area of 21 sq. km with rocky bays, beautiful coves and hilly landscape of vineyards and pathways leading down
to sandy beaches. Today Argentario has almost become a small world of its own with fashionable and famous exclusive resorts and private beaches for
the grand summer hotels. The island is often quite crowded at the weekends in summer
Just up from the beach of Feniglia, set on a flat-topped hill (113m), is the town of
Ansedonia which was founded by the Romans in 273. Surrounded by polygonal walls with 18 towers and three gates,
are also the forum and remains of the old city of Cosa (Città di Cosa) that once stood here.
The hinterland also offers various excursions and sightseeing trips, whether it be a visit to the DOC-vineyards of Parrina,
Ansonica, Bianco di Pitigliano, or Morellino, the cheese farms of Manciano or Sorano that produce both excellent but very different types of
Pecorino and Ricotta cheeses which are available for purchase at very reasonable prices, or Etruscan archaelogical sites such as Sorano
For nature lovers, there is also the Parco Naturale della Maremma
(SS1 Aurelia direction north following the signs for Alberese) which is a must. The area between Principina a Mare and Talamone,
which in 1975 was designated a national park (10,000 hectares), is an area of outstanding natural beauty.
