Scarlino and Surrounding Area Located on a hill covered in olive trees and Mediterranean woodland, Scarlino looks out over the Follonica plain and Gulf. The old village consists of a partly restored castle and a group of well-preserved houses. Worth a visit both by day and night for its panorama and the romantic atmosphere it emanates. Following the road in the direction of the sea, on the left there is a sign leading to some Etruscan ruins. Scarlino is not only a hillside town of art but its territory extends to the sea and in 1999 at Puntone, a modern tourist port was realized. A visit to the Cala Violina (a selected beach among the 11 most beautiful ones in Italy), just 3km away, is a must. Between Puntone di Scarlino and Punta Ala, midway between the lush Mediterranean woodland and the crystalline sea, with breath-taking panoramas of the Gulf of Follonica and the southern islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Reached only by sign-posted pathways, its name derives from the sound similar to a violin that is perceived when treading on its beautiful white sand. Also situated along the splendid Maremma coast, facing the Isle of Elba and protected by the promontory of Piombino and Punta Ala, is the coastal resort of Follonica (4 km away) in the centre of the Gulf that takes its name. Its favourable geographical position, mild climate, wide fine sanded beaches bordered by pine woods stretching around the bay and calm shallow sea with no dangerous currents makes Follonica an ideal, all year round, holiday destination and particularly suitable for families with children. Immersed in splendid green pine forests, it offers an ideal alternative to a day on the beach for nature lovers. South of Follonica, at Puntone di Scarlino, there is the Marina di Scarlino tourist harbour and port with shops, restaurants and boat excursions. Just off the coast lie the islands of Elba and Sparviero. On a clear day the island of Corsica can also be viewed. Only a short drive inland (about seven kilometres from the port and beach at Puntone di Scarlino) or from Scarlino itself, a panoramic road leads uphill to Il Castello di Scarlino (castle of Scarlino), one of Maremma's imposing middle ages castles. Scarlino castle - is also known as "La Rocca Aldobrandesca" or "La Rocca Pisana" and is unusual in that it has an irregular design of five sides and three different shaped towers. Sat on the ridge of a hill covered in Mediterranean macchia, with the medieval village of Scarlino clung to the hillside below, it was once a stronghold of the city of Pisa. Today, still commanding a spectacular panoramic view of the coastline and inland hills, it is a powerful reminder of the political and family feuds that dominated medieval life in Maremma. And is the site of a costumed medieval festival each year. Punta Ala is one of the most exclusive seaside resorts along the coast, (approx. 14 km away), whose success is built around its famous marina and yacht club. This elegant resort is located in a large pine forest with well cared for gardens and clean streets. The sandy coast is served by a series of well-equipped beaches and, if you push a little further on, you will find unforgettable bays surrounded by nature: Cala Martina and Cala Violina.
